What You Should Know for 2008-2009

Use the following information to fill out the Library permission slip.  Then watch for library books and more information that will be sent home with your students..

The Library opens on Sept 2nd staying open until 3:30 Mondays through Thursdays, (Fridays till 12:45). Parents are especially welcome after school.

Your child is scheduled to attend class in the library once a week, as described in the schedule listed below.  Please be sure books are returned to school on your child’s library day so that they don’t miss out on getting new books, and move ahead with assignments from their teachers!

Reading incentives:

For more information on these programs, refer to these other pages on this web site:

K, 1st, & 2nd grade students, go to the ADVENTURE SEEKER page.

3rd, 4th & 5th grade students, go to the BOOK BINGO page.

6th 7th & 8th grade students, go to the ALL STAR page.

These programs will begin right away and continue until early May to reward each student for reading habits.  Students who fall behind will miss out on prizes and end of the year parties.

Your signature is needed as proof of the reading your child has done, otherwise they cannot receive rewards. This gives both you and me a way to instill honesty within their Christian education.

Accelerated Reading Books:
In this library these books are labeled to easily identify with Lexile reading level scores. These titles can also be viewed on the AR list page: http://www.stvincents-school.org/reader.htm

LIBRARY RULES

Please read below before signing the permission slip:

To Check Out Books:  Proceed to the check-out desk.  The librarian or volunteer aide will scan your library card and books for you.  You may stamp your book’s date due slip with the date stamp.

Returning Books:  There is a “Return Books” counter in the library.  If the library door is shut, please set the books into the “Book Drop Wagon”. Also each classroom has a basket to return library books.

Overdue Books:  Students with overdue books cannot check out any other books until the late books are returned to the library. However, new books can be kept on hold for one week until overdue books are back.  Late slips for overdue books will be sent out at the end of every quarter before report card time.  No late fees will be charged, but QUARTERLY REPORT CARDS WILL NOT BE ISSUED UNTIL OVERDUE BOOKS ARE RETURNED, OR REPLACEMENT FEES ARE PAID.  Parents will be called the week report cards are due with information in this case.

Lost Books:  If a book is lost, the student will not be allowed to check out books until the lost book is paid for.  The price of the book is available from the librarian.  These funds will then make it possible to reorder the book at a discount.  It is preferable to pay the replacement amount instead of bringing in a new copy.  IF THE LOST BOOK IS FOUND at a later time, please return it and you will be refunded!

Renewing Books:          Instead of placing books to be renewed in a book return area, hold onto them until it is time to line up in library class at the check out counter.  Tell the librarian or aide that this book is to be renewed. Renews will be allowed as long as there is not a hold on that title, or you do not have an overdue book.

Be Careful Not to Trade or Loan Library Books Out to Friends!           Since the student who checked out the book is the one responsible for its return, please have the friend who wants the book come with you to the library. The book should be checked out to them on their card.

Keeping Books in Order in the Library:  A shelf marker must be used to mark the spot where a book was removed from the shelf.  Otherwise, the book must be returned to the “Book Return” counter.  Only Mrs. Airriess and library volunteers are to place books back on the shelves when a shelf marker is no longer in place.

New Books on Display:   These books will not be available for checkout until they have been on display for 2 weeks.  However, you are encouraged to fill out a hold slip to reserve the book and add your name to the waiting list.  Students with overdue books will be put back to the end of this waiting list.

Reference Books:  These books must be returned the same day and cannot leave the building.  This policy applies to everyone!  They must be returned to the library, not in the classroom basket.

CD ROMs:  These must be returned after 24 hours to the librarian.  Do not place them in the classroom library basket.

Thank You for Enforcing These Rules!

As we look forward to an exciting new school year, I want to thank all those who volunteer their time, energy and ideas to make this library the success that it is for students and their families.

Volunteers are always needed, whether it is during class time or not.  If you’d like to be involved, please call M
